For over a decade Cold Spring Jazz Quartet has appeared regularly in nightclubs, restaurants and concert venues in the Baltimore-Washington area, winning a broad and loyal following. Favorite venues have included Pebbles Pub, The Tremont Hotel, Ixia Restaurant, and recent private engagements have included WYPR’s “Sip and Swing” fundraiser, Stella Maris’s annual wine-tasting event, and a featured concert and lecture at the Engineers Club’s Jammin’ at the Mansion series.
,br> Recently the group has also begun performing as a drumless trio. For smaller rooms, this format allows CSJQ to present its music at a lower volume. But at any size, CSJQ can create a variety of different sounds and moods—from a swing-and-standards combo to a bebop group or blues band—depending upon the audience and venue.

CSJQ’s debut CD, Same Place. Different Time, showcases the group’s versatility. In addition to passionate performances of classic bop and instrumentals such as Bud Powell’s “Webb City” and Dexter Gordon’s “Cheesecake,” it features pianist Brian Smith’s appealing Latin and ballad compositions. You’ll also tap your feet to the group’s exciting renditions of Mark Osteen’s gospel-inflected romp, “The Amen Corner.” Osteen’s vocals distinguish CSJQ from most straight-ahead jazz groups, lending songs such as “Doxy” and “The Old Country” a distinctive flavor. Mixing vocals and instrumentals, classics and new compositions, CSJQ offers a rich menu for any music lover. We’re scheduled to go into the studio to record our new CD in February!
